Not Your Typical Hairstylist

Greetings friends,

A major part of being a hairstylist is making people beautiful. When you make someone feel and look beautiful you're giving them a gift and you're providing a service you can't otherwise put a price on. Just a gentle reminder to be nice and gracious with your guests and do everything you can to be nice and give them a wonderful experience. Far too often do we see stylist who act inappropriate and unprofessional. Lets stop this! Going to a Paul Mitchell school allows for greater opportunities than you might have been able to achieve in another school. We participate in fashion shows and runway events on a very regular basis and this allows for a heavy growth in skill, client base and in your portfolio. Also our school throws many events for the community and for ourselves. Upcoming at the end of this month (March) we will be throwing a wonderful fashion show/runway event for our school graduation. A handful of students will be styling and prepping models for a runway show to kick off our quad-annual graduation. Our theme will be classic PinUp model styles.
Working in fashion shows and runway events allows for a high degree of improvement in styling skills and garnering experience. Personally i have a high desire to do fashion and print work and doing as many events as you can within the school gives me, and other students, much needed opportunities to grow as a stylist. Do as much as you can while you can and take as much advantage as you can, especially while its free(ish).

Hello all.

Timing Timing TIMING! This is the most important thing to any and every successful hair stylist in the industry. You need to be aware of your timing and to keep trying to get faster (without sacrificing quality). To become more successful you should actively keep track of how long it takes you to do each type of service and to always try to pay attention to how you're doing as compared to the last time you performed said service.

Take today for example, I managed to place a full head of foils and have it all process in just under and hour, but much to my shagrin there was minor bleeding righhhht along her hairline. Not such a big deal eh? Wrong, her hair would NOT take color and I had to try to repigment two separate times. Now I was doing very good on timing, but a small slip up lead to me doubling the time of the service.

Just try and keep sure you're paying attention to what you're doing and to not sacrifice you quality for quantity.

Commitments!!!

Hello Friends, long time no see.

Today i'd like to talk about commitments, in life and in any industry keeping your commitments is the most important thing you can do for yourself and for those around you. You may not always be lucky enough to have someone who will give you second chances and you need to do the best you can in every situation and not rely on second chances.

If you make a commitment you need to keep it, deadlines need to be met and tasks must be fulfilled. If you're known for not being able to be relied on how do you ever intend to be taken seriously in the work place and be given responsibilities? If you're willing to work in a $10 hair shop go ahead and be lazy but if you want to charge $150 for a haircut you need to be prompt and reliable.

When you make a promise to someone you need to follow through. Build as many bridges as you can in this industry and gain a reputation for being able to be counted on and for getting things done. Our field relies heavily on word of mouth and public opinion. Do yourself a favor and follow through with your commitments.

Help for Haiti

Greetings Blogosphere.

As you may be well aware of a tragedy has hit the nation of Haiti. Earlier this week an earthquake hit Haiti and the death toll is terrible. Many groups are organizing to help these peoples and Paul Mitchell is trying to do its part. In the next two weeks we hope to raise $100,000 to donate to the Red Cross for Haiti. You can do your part buy visiting a PMTS near you and donating as much as you can be it $1, $5 or more, any bit will help.

Once again Hi How are you? Oh realllly? How interesting! You dont say! Me? I'm doing fantastic! Could BE any better. No no my ears dont hurt haha! Well moving on to something a smidge more serious; what are you looking for in your hair? How can i make you happy?

The first step to retaining clientele, pleasing new clients and providing your guests with a relaxed and calm experience and building a comfortable and professional repertoire. Whether you particularly love the guest or not its part of your job to be kind, accommodating and professional. The only way you will gain experience (and make money) is to please your guest.

At PMTS Tysons Corner you are fortunate to have the privilege of seeing many different guests. Throughout your tenure here at PMTS you will encounter many people of varied backgrounds, political views and personal beliefs. While this may seem intimidating, this provides you with the invaluable experience in dealing with all kinds of people.

Here ate PMTS we have a motto: "Fake it until you make it!". If you don't like your guest on a personal level; fake it! Very few of us have the ability to pick and choose our guests so you need to make the best of every situation. Give every guest your best every time. Give your guests your best face and do your best to leave them with a smile.
We are in the service industry. Our job is to make others happy. Don't forget it!

Greetings Blogosphere!

My name is Edgar and I'd like to tell you a few things about myself before we get into the roll if it. I started at PMTS on September first. I'm not your typical average hairstylist, ha! i'm not actually your typical average anything. I do my best to be the best and have high standards for myself. I will be an amazing hairstylist and I WILL be a Visonary.

You may not know what a Visionary is so i'll let you in. At PMTS we have a term for a person who is forward focused, always willing to help anyone out and maintains a high level of decorum, professionalism and all around good attitude, we call this person a Visionary. Here's a picture of what a Visionary looks like....

Around the Holiday Season its really hard to maintain a Visionary focus, one of the biggest and hardest things to do is to actually attend school or a salon. With the hectic schedule and family members coming in an out of town it's really easy to convince yourself to skip school or book out or take a leave of absence, but the best thing you can do for yourself is GO TO SCHOOL. I know I know, obvious right? It's really hard to actually do this. You want to stay at home and watch tv and hang out with your family, you dont want to deal with the rush and hectic life that is the salon during the holidays but it's the best thing you can do for yourself.

At school you will probably see 2 or 3 clients at most on your busiest day, but during the holiday seasons you could be expected to handle 4 clients a day every day for two weeks (unlikely, but a guy can wish cant he?). You NEED to be able to handle back to back scheduling and double booking. In a salon there is no one to save you but yourself and no one you can rely on but yourself. So do yourself a favor, go to school, do your best to get acclimated to a hectic and busy schedule and as always TRY TO HAVE FUN!
